What Is ZArchiver Used For?

It opens and makes compressed files. Zip, RAR, 7z, the lot.

Most people install it for one reason, though: games. A lot of big Android games ship as an APK plus an OBB data file inside a zip, and ZArchiver is how you unpack that and drop the OBB into the right folder. It can even install APK and OBB straight from an archive.

Beyond that it handles a ridiculous number of formats. It can create 7z, zip, tar, gz, bz2, XZ, lz4 and zst. It can extract all of those plus rar, rar5, iso, dmg, cab, deb, rpm, wim, egg, alz and more. Split archives too (file.7z.001, part1.rar, .z01). And password-protected ones.

It’s been on Play since January 2012 and has 100M+ downloads, so it’s not exactly a new kid.

Here’s the honest part. The free version already does most of the work. Pro adds four things, straight from the developer’s list:

1. Light and dark theme

2. Password storage, so you’re not retyping the same archive password every time

3. Image preview inside archives, to see pics without extracting

4. Editing files inside an archive: open a file, change it, save, and ZArchiver updates the archive

That’s it. No “speed boost”, no “unlimited” anything. Anyone promising more is making it up.

Is ZArchiver Safe?

The original is one of the safest apps you can install, and there’s a nice technical reason. ZArchiver doesn’t even have internet permission. It literally can’t send your files anywhere.

Which gives you an easy check for any ZArchiver APK, including this one. Android’s normal Settings screen won’t show internet access (it’s a silent permission), so use a free permission viewer like App Manager or any “APK info” app. If it lists “full network access” or INTERNET for ZArchiver, something was added that shouldn’t be. Delete it.

ZArchiver Access Denied Fix (Android 11, 12, 13, 14)

This is the error people hit constantly. You extract a game’s OBB, try to paste it into Android/obb or Android/data, and get “access denied”.

It’s not ZArchiver’s fault. Starting with Android 11, Google locked those two folders so apps can’t freely touch each other’s data.
